PARENTS & CARERS - Childminders

Finding a good, reliable childminder was once a bit of a headache, but that no longer needs be the case. Childminding is now something covered by registration and legislation.

If someone is caring for children under the age of 8 in their own home and the children aren’t their blood relatives, they are required by law to be registered with the school inspectorate, Ofsted and are subject to inspection.

The number of children they can accept is also governed by Ofsted. In England the maximum is six children under 8 years old, of which usually no more than three may be under the age of 5, and of these, usually no more than one child may be under 1 year old (although Ofsted may grant an exception, for example, for brothers and sisters). These numbers will include the childminder's own children if they have any.

Once a child reaches 8 years of age a separate set of rules applies where childminding is concerned and all "over 7" childminders care only for children aged 8 and older. They do not need to be registered or inspected by Ofsted, but they can, if they wish join the Ofsted Childcare Register.

If you are looking for childcare and have a prospective childminder, then make an appointment to visit and have a good look around. Remember if you telephone during the day the person will almost certainly be looking after children so it may be a little difficult for them to give detailed answers to your questions, but all childminders will expect a parent to visit them and see what they can offer.

Ask questions. Remember your child will be spending a great deal of time with this person so ask about their experience, qualifications and what exactly they will offer your child during the time they are together. Ask to see previous Ofsted reports, enquire about arrangements for holiday periods, and check regarding insurance. It may seem an endless list, but it is the best way to ensure your peace of mind and the safety of your child, and all childminders will be more than happy to give you all the information you need to make sure they are right for you and your child.

Make sure to mention if your child has any medical conditions which may impact upon their care or restrict their activities.

Personal recommendation is always a good way to find out about any service and childminding is no different so ask friends or ask the childminders to provide references or testimonials for parents who have used them.

Obviously childminding is also a business and there will be a cost for providing the service. Make sure you ask about the fees the minder will charge and if there are any extra charges, such if you are late to collect your child, or if the children go on a day out.

Many childminders are members of the National Childminders Association (NMCA). This is a registered charity and the professional association for childminders. Since 1977 the NMCA has worked with registered childminders, nannies, local authorities and National Government to ensure everyone in England and Wales have access to high quality home-based childcare, play, learning and family support.

The NCMA website is an excellent place to start if you are thinking of using a childminder. The site has an excellent "frequently asked questions" section and clearly explains what you should be looking for when selecting a childminder. It also has a section specifically for people who are thinking of becoming childminders which lays out all the regulations and guidelines for under and over 7 practitioners.
