Drugs & Alcohol - Solvent Abuse
While nowhere near as popular as they were several years ago, solvents are still an issue parents should be aware of, as it kills around 70 young people every year. Solvent misuse is highly dangerous and has been the cause of many deaths among young people. 70% of people who died last year were aged between 9 and 19. 39% of victims died sniffing solvents for the first time. The solvent base of some adhesives gives a "high" to the user but can also cause long and short term medical problems. The adhesive is decanted from its container into a plastic bag which is then placed over the nose and mouth and inhaled, producing the euphoric "high" effect.
Solvents are found in many household products and it is a racing certainty that if you looked in your bathroom or under the kitchen sink you would find products containing them. Glue, petrol, lighter fluid and many aerosols all contain solvents.
In the short term, besides the "high" solvent abuse can cause:
- Loss of consciousness
- Sores around the mouth
- Reduced balance, coordination and judgement
In the long term it can cause:
- Brain damage
- Liver and kidney damage
- Depression and other psychiatric problems
Its use at any time, regardless of long or short term abuse, can cause a reaction in the in the body which can lead to respiratory or heart failure. Unless immediate medical help is obtained that can lead to death.
